Kaleidospheres

kaleidospheres exhibition athens onassis madinteraction koumaria
Kaleidospheres is an interactive art installation created in Greece during the Koumaria’s artistic residency.
In Kaleidospheres unconventional geometries and sound synthesis for a digital theremin were explored. It was built with custom electronic circuits, an arduino board and sound processing in PureData.
The antennas in the installation were two spheres of metal wire, in which it was possible to insert the hands and by which control both the LED lights and the sounds generated in real time.

Urban Spirits

Urban Spirits

Exhibition/Presentation: Medialab Prado – Interactive Media Facade (2013) Madrid, Spain.

Summary of the work

Urban Spirits is an urban game made with twitter, creative coding, arduino and custom designed circuits. Its aim was to explore novel ways to promote eco-friendly, creative and aggregative behavior in the context of an urban neighborhood. The game makes innovative use of smart city sensors and urban spaces, particularly interactive street furniture and a digital facade. Individual users can interact through both smartphones and physical interaction with urban furniture.

The project was selected by Medialab Prado to be part of a program called Solid Interfaces and Urban Games: Digital Games in the Public Spaces. It was a production workshop for the creation of urban games that use the public space as an interface.

Starting point of the project

The starting point was the exploration of creative and interactive ways of visualizing the small gestures with positive impact that occur continuously in a neighborhood but which hide in the lives of individuals and are often not perceived. The challenge was to offer the neighborhood a tool that would allow them to shape and visualise their positive habits, increasing the sense of belonging and community engagement.

Urban game and storytelling

The story and the game itself are based on the metaphor of the “Urban Spirits”. The purpose of the game is to tame the little spirits through the interaction with the urban surrounding. Each interaction is a little challenge exercise aimed to fortify the participants sense of social community involvement, creativity and conscious ecologic behaviours.

An artistic experiment with the aim of:

Exploring new hybrid forms of interaction and community engagement between real and virtual spaces, between physical and digital interfaces, and between multimedia content and direct participation.

Promoting creative behaviors in urban environments exploring new forms of street art, augmented architecture and ways of fruition of artistic contents.

Creating new connections and modalities of participation and socialization among the residents of an urban neighborhood.
Raise awareness on urban pollution and promote sustainable behavior to limit it.

Process and working experience

It was very exciting for us to have the opportunity to work on a project that nestled among the architectural elements of the district, encouraging people to develop a more conscious and ecologic behaviour through a fun activity, such as playing a game. Our expectations were focused on the realisation of a functional prototype. More than that, we were excited to have had the possibility of proving our skills, challenging ourselves from a technical and social point of view, trying to find a solutions on how to blend virtual and urban spaces. We loved working in such an innovative and technologically advanced space such as MediaLab Prado, collaborating with a professional and expert team of artists, designers and technologists.

Shadows of aiKia – Documentation Cut!

interactive media dance performance with sensors

For this performance art piece we design an environment where the stage performers are not bound to static expressions of sound and visuals. We are working with behavior-based approaches in reaction with interactive software settings for sound and visuals. These approaches and technologies affect the environment; adjusting the situations of appearance of shadows, their recognition as mirror effect and projections, their acceptance in the complex of the personality, change of the position of ego towards those elements. We want to achieve an emotional and physical sensation for the audience where the sound and visuals are in interaction with the dancer embodying the space we will create. This will be done with original visual and audio content, software and hardware interaction. This dynamic interactivity engages both the stage performers and audience to a deeper level of interest and identification.
Another possible interpretation Shadows of aiKia is research and examination of the relationship in between body and its biological existence and system of elements, light and sound, both vibrations in the space existing in due to time line. What is the relationship between human consciousness, space where it’s placed and its perception of time. We reproduce a metaphorical creation of the relativity of those dimensions, according to theory of special relativity, testing the limits of speed and trying to win over the equation defining energy and mass.

The visual and audio elements will be connected with the dancer’s movements speed and rotation, using an Arduino board, 1 accelerometer and 1 gyroscope, which will be the consequences of mind and body reactions onto the audiovisual environment.

The dance and movement will focus on duality and the juxtaposition of one’s ego of light and/or dark shadow in the space defined by and in relationship to the visuals and sound.

The space and time, light and sound will become other shadows of the person in the labyrinth of its existence.

We used Max/jitter, AbletonLive, and built a prototype with Arduino, 1 accelerometer and 1 gyroscope.
both sound and visuals do react depending on the movement of the dancer

Shadows of aiKia

interactive media dance performance with sensors

This movement-based interactive audiovisual performance, “Shadows of aiKia” is a project following the previous performance II aiKia II, presented live at Platoon Kunsthalle on 18 August 2012. II aiKia II was conceptually inspired by the process of individuation, described by Carl Gustav Jung’s analytical psychology.
Conceptually, this most recent incarnation is based on a deeper analysis which focuses on the “shadow aspects” of our egos; parts of our personality which remain unconscious, which we are not aware of, with our tendency to reject or ignore these negative aspects. There are necessary steps to uncovering dark shadows by paying attention to processes of negative aspects of our minds mirrored by other people. This is called projection. Once we see clearly, like in a mirror that life sets in front of us, why certain things are making us angry, disturbing us or stirring our emotions, we need to understand it and embrace it as equal parts of our individualities. This new approach allows us to comprehend a positive side of denying those “wrong” parts, taking new perspectives, for example that we could achieve certain goals due to our fight against them. There is also a “white” shadow as positive aspect we admire. It might inspire us to behave like our idols, therefore if we accept this positive shadow, we might achieve similar aims as of our heroes.

The goal is to find our true self in repeating self-actualization; we face the history of ourselves in a continuous link to our unconscious past which repeats, ultimately setting a pattern which creates our future.

What is the relationship between human consciousness, space where it’s placed and its perception of time. We reproduce a metaphorical creation of the relativity of those dimensions, according to theory of special relativity, testing the limits of speed and trying to win over the equation defining energy and mass.

The visual and audio elements will be connected with the dancer’s heart beats, body heat and sweat, which will be the consequences of mind and body reactions onto the audiovisual environment. The dance and movement will focus on duality and the juxtaposition of one’s ego of light and/or dark shadow in the space defined by and in relationship to the visuals and sound.

The space and time, light and sound will become other shadows of the person in the labyrinth of its existence.

Performing Arts and New Technologies

Interactive Projection Mapping Dance

How is it performing with the machine?

[su_divider top=”no”]

Moving bodies and changing light, the space blends real and imaginary worlds! Dancers perceive the resonating environment in a symbiotic improvisation with invisible computational entities. Their movements are caught and transformed by electronic senses which trigger responses and feedback. They become aware of the hidden patterns of computer interfaces, while sounds and projections create enhanced spheres of choreographic interactions.

Are you ready to explore new creative opportunities?

In an interactive work, a symbiotic bond between the design of performative spaces and the performance ideation is established. Interactive technologies allow us to consider people, objects and space as potential interpreters, creating augmented dramaturgies. The biometric and kinematic data are transformed into visual and sound effects, generating a real time dialogue between bodies and multi-sensory architectures.

Playful and Embodied Experience Design

Advanced Interface Sense Shifting

Is play serious business?

[su_divider top=”no”]

“To be playful and serious at the same time is possible, and it defines the ideal mental condition.” – wrote John Dewey – we humans are playful creatures, the consciousness of play unfolds within a spatiotemporal frame, wherein the special rules of the game are absolutely binding: it is the magic circle! It encloses temporary worlds within the ordinary world, conjuring up instinct acting from inner necessity. All play moves and have their existence within a playground, the consecrated spot. Like an initiation rite, the essence of playing is modulating experiences that emphasise interactive, participatory and imaginatively reflexive engagement with the reality. Physical computing can transform things into magical artefacts. Ludic interfaces can add unexpected and fantastical layers to the most familiar object or to the entire urban landscape, making possible distinctively human behaviours to flourish.

From interactive art to games and workshops ..or maybe is the city the playground?

Forever curious, at M:A:D Interaction! we design playful and social experiences with you.

Design Fiction and Transmedia Narratives

Do not stop thinking about tomorrow!

[su_divider top=”no”]

Our most radical imagination is under siege: M:A:D Interaction! goes on an audacious and experimental path, which aims to stimulate critical thinking applied to multiple contexts, generating multiple futures that are fair, local, inclusive and ecosostenible. We will use the thematic approach of different fiction genres and the methodologies offered by the field of future studies as tools for research and creation. M:A:D Interaction! wants to offer a methodological preparation for change, to critically investigate the present and understand its tendencies: the weak signals of which manifolds possible futures. With a special attention to design fiction: more speculative than a prototype, a fictional design represents a “narrative object” that can be used in a performative way, to reflect and narrate projected experiences into the future.

Do you want to propose a creative collaboration or host a workshop?

In our commissioned works and laboratories,  participants will be asked to create not a unique and utopian vision, but an archipelago of different futures, a landscape to expand the ability to imagine near future in autonomy, without getting caught up in preconstructed stories that indicate the future as unique and already defined.
