The Documentary about Koumaria Arts Residency!

Koumaria Art Residency walking nature artists

Koumaria: Improvising Across Boundaries in New Media Art and Community, traces the history and development of the Koumaria Arts Residency via interviews, performance footage, animation and in situ footage. Run by the Athens-based new media art collective Medea Electronique, the annual Koumaria residency draws an international group of new media artists to an isolated olive oil farm in Southern Greece for the creation of collective cross-arts projects grounded in an improvisatory philosophy. This film documents the artistic, social and personal aspects of the residency, exploring how community forms around the creation of new media art.

Experimental Sound and Music JAM

Two experimental sessions to make love with sounds and our imagination. Bring the instrument with which you most vibrate or the junky stuff that inspire you the most: we are going to create a playful space to get closer to the simplicity of the most basic electronic music.

We will pick up samples of rebellious sounds, indolent noises, unexpected variations of the ether. We will explore improbable connections, altered perceptions, ephemeral scores. The collective music creativity belongs to us and we will enjoy it!

The second session will be dedicated especially to explore simple analog synthesizers!
In particular we are going to make circuits based on the famous integrated chip 555.

What sounds will they produce?
Come and find out!

9 and 22 June 2016  from 19H to 21H.

Participation is free! The activity will be realized at Baumannlab within the support of the Hack Club program.

Accessible Culture & Training Erasmus+ Project

act erasmus

About the overall project:

Accessible Culture & Training is a project funded by the ERASMUS + Programme of the EU.

The project ACT proposes the definition of a new professional profile, that of the “Media Accessibility Expert/Manager for the Scenic Arts”, and also the various types of training activities associated to this professional.

The project focuses on promoting equal opportunities and accessibility to cultural events (scenic arts) across countries and languages searching to establish and qualify the profile of accessibility expert to empower all citizens and especially people with disabilities.

More info here: http://pagines.uab.cat/act/

About the collaboration:

One of the activities in ACT is to organize a hackathon. Some meetings will take place in advance to prepare participants for the final day. M:A:D Interaction will collaborate as consultant and workshop facilitator with the aims to design new prototypes.
These activities will take place at ESTRUCH Sabadell, Barcelona

Why we realize objects?

We went from an identity defined by “I am what I produce” to “I am what I consume” to arrive to “I am what I prosume”. What happens if we break definitively with this paradigm to come to “I am what I take care of? “ Without going to the thought of Fukuoka for whom behind every act of creation or crafts lies an act of destruction, is it possible an oil and conflict-minerals free digital fabrication? What is its ecological footprint? What if we borrow from the wisdom of the plants a biomimetic model? What would be the seeds of an object? And what are its fruits?

Is it possible to imagine a digital fabrication as a tool in the fight against climate change? How much energy and resources can be saved from its continued spread? Which cultural models should accompany that? How to disseminate them? Is it actually recycled what is prototyped and self-produced? What is its “unplanned” obsolescence? How long last a prototype? What guidelines can promote a continuous upgrade of an object instead of its abandonment? What is its symbolic value? What is the relationship between objects and tools? Is it possible to definitely break the pact between innovation and consumerism? Which and how many items we should produce? How to balance their access and distribution? Which needs are they covering? Do we really need objects to maintain social relationships? Or are they just fetishes that hide our fears and doubts of being unaccepted?

On what ethics, this new mode of production is based? How is it different from mass production? Can it really offer solutions to the humankind’s evolution and growth? Or is it just a nice curtain behind which the deepest eternal problems hide? Which is its social and ecological resilience? Does it protect or destroy cultural biodiversity and local artisanal practices? In front of the massive and global sharing of new knowledge and techniques, how to preserve the ones that are seculars and the result of adaptation to the place of origin?

How accessible is the maker’s culture? In ancient times to transmit and spread cultural models and good practices, we were using the mythological tale. Can the figure of maker be considered as a descendant of the archetypal figure of the creator? In Jungian psychology the gesture of creation is closely linked to the values of authenticity, identity and responsibility. A gesture to get closer to our entelechies instead of feeding our egos. Which is the path of the Maker?

The proposal then of an open manifesto that places and tries to answer these questions, is sublimated into an artifact: an accessible game by which we can operate and analyze our practices as experimenters and prototypers; a materialization in a symbolic language capable of communication with our most intimate and profound creativity; a series of lenses, which one at a time, able to emphasize individual aspects of an idea or project that we intend to achieve.

How should a Tarot of the Maker look like?

Smart Gardening Lab

During one week, M:A:D Interaction will carry out a citizen science activity that intends to apply basic and low cost technology to the urban garden of L’Estruch (Sabadell) in the form of an open laboratory on smart gardening.

The lab will define the ideas and objectives to be reached (like setting a webcam to have a real-time streaming from the garden), also the irrigation system will be update and be made smart thanks to an Arduino YUN board.

The Smart Gardening Lab is born from the collaboration between MediaEstruch, the Metropolitan and M:A:D Interaction. The lab will be open to anyone who wants to participate, especially technologists, horticulturists or interested in new opportunities to make community and strengthen citizen collaboration.
